During the 16th century, the city was the cultural capital of Salento thanks to the Acquaviva family, dukes of Nardò. The heart of the city is the baroque Piazza Salandra , with several civic and religious landmarks, such as the Guglia dell’Immacolata, standing in the middle of the square and built in 1769. The coast close to Nardò, characterized by rough cliffs and little sand beaches is also impressive, like its Natural Park of Porto Selvaggio and Palude del Capitano , a large forest right by the sea. Near Nardò, Santa Maria al Bagno is a lovely coastal village, with its pleasant buildings, splashed by the crystal-clear Ionian Sea. Here you can also visit the Museo della Memoria e dell’Accoglienza , a museum in memory of the many Jews, who survived the Nazi camps and found here a safe and peaceful harbor. Nardò is also a flourishing agricultural centre, famous for being the birthplace of the Cellina olive , as well as the tasty Nardò watermelon and for its high-quality wine. A wine tasting in Nardò is indeed the best way to savor the true taste of Salento. Ask for a quotation GET THE BEST FROM YOUR TOUR!
